⚠️ Important: BMI Limitations

BMI is a standard screening tool but has significant limitations:

  • Does not measure body composition: BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes and muscular individuals may be classified as "overweight" or "obese" despite being healthy.
  • Ignores body type and distribution: People store fat differently. Where you carry weight matters more than the number itself.
  • Not universally applicable: BMI standards may not accurately reflect health for all ethnic groups, ages, or body types.
  • Individual variation: Some people in "underweight" or "obese" categories may be perfectly healthy, while others in the "normal" range may have health concerns.

Use BMI as one of many health indicators, not the definitive measure. Always consult healthcare professionals for personalized health assessment.

BMI Calculation Formulas

Metric Formula:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)

Example: 70 kg ÷ (1.75 m)² = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9

Imperial Formula:

BMI = (weight (lbs) ÷ height² (in)) × 703

Example: (154 lbs ÷ (69 in)²) × 703 = 22.7
