Frequently asked questions
Why does the Philippines have so many national heroes?
Spanish colonial rule lasted over 330 years, and resistance came from scholars, workers, warriors, queens and sultans. There is no single law declaring one 'national hero' — Rizal is the closest, but Bonifacio, Lapu-Lapu and Gabriela Silang are honored alongside him.
Did Lapu-Lapu really kill Ferdinand Magellan?
Magellan died at the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, when his landing party was defeated by Lapu-Lapu's warriors. Spanish chronicles confirm Magellan fell in the fighting at Mactan.
When did the Philippines become independent?
Independence from Spain was declared on June 12, 1898, creating Asia's first constitutional republic; independence from the United States came on July 4, 1946. The Philippines now celebrates June 12 as Independence Day.
