How do I calculate hours between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time. If the end is earlier than the start (overnight shift), add 24 hours. Then subtract any break time. We do all of this automatically — just toggle 'Overnight shift' if your shift crosses midnight.

Why is my answer in decimal hours?

Decimal hours are easier for payroll and billing. 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 decimal hours. Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate to get pay or invoice amount.
